How cold will it be Monday morning at the bus stop in Columbus, LaGrange and Auburn?
At 7 AM Monday it will be 57 degrees in Columbus, 54 in LaGrange and 57 in Auburn, sunny and dry at every stop, with Greenville the coolest at 52.
Step outside at 7 AM Monday in Greenville and the thermometer will read 52 degrees, the coolest stop anywhere in the viewing area. Nowhere else is much warmer. From the Meriwether County line to the Alabama state line, the 7 AM readings Monday run from 52 to 58 degrees, and every single town is sunny with no rain chance at all.
The reason is the dry air that moved in this weekend. Moist air holds onto heat overnight like a blanket; dry air lets it radiate straight up into a clear sky. With calm wind and no clouds, the ground cools quickly after dark, which is why the morning will feel far more like October than the afternoon does. Columbus climbs to 88 degrees Monday afternoon, a swing of more than 30 degrees from the bus stop reading.
Around the northern towns it will be coolest. Greenville sits at 52, Hogansville, home of Callaway, at 53, and it will be 54 in LaGrange, where LaGrange, Troup County and LaGrange Academy are, 54 in Manchester and 54 in Talbotton at Central-Talbotton.
Through the middle of the Chattahoochee Valley, expect 55 degrees in Hamilton for Harris County students, 55 in Cusseta at Chattahoochee County, 55 in Buena Vista at Marion County and 55 in Butler at Taylor County, each with a light breeze of about 5 mph in places. Farther south it is 56 in Lumpkin at Stewart County, 56 in Preston at Webster County and 56 in Ellaville at Schley County.
On the Alabama side, LaFayette and Chambers Academy start at 55 degrees, Valley and Beulah at 55, and Russell County in Seale at 56. Auburn and Lee-Scott, Opelika and Beauregard, Smiths Station and Glenwood, Lanett and Springwood, Loachapoka, and Booker T. Washington in Tuskegee all begin the morning at 57.
Columbus and Phenix City land at 57 degrees as well, with a 5 mph breeze in Columbus. That covers Shaw, Hardaway, Columbus, Spencer, Kendrick, Jordan, Carver, Northside, Calvary Christian, Pacelli and Brookstone, plus Central in Phenix City. The warmest stops in the area are on the southern edge: Randolph Clay in Cuthbert and Eufaula at 57, and Quitman County in Georgetown, Notasulga and Barbour County in Clayton at 58.
What to send with them: a hoodie or a light jacket that folds into a backpack, and nothing more. No umbrella is needed at any stop, and the jacket will be dead weight by lunchtime. One more thing for drivers on the morning run — at 7 AM the sun is still below the horizon, since it does not come up until around 7:30 and is rising a couple of minutes later each day now. Headlights on, and sunglasses within reach for the eastbound stretch afterward.
