Sixty-seven by the fourth quarter in Valley on a dry Friday night
What will the weather be for Friday night high school football in Columbus, Auburn and LaGrange?
Friday, September 25 stays dry at every stadium in the CNAW area, with kickoff temperatures from 74 to 77 and the coolest fourth quarter in Valley, Alabama, at 67.

Friday night is the one the concession stands have been waiting on. Kickoff temperatures across the whole viewing area land between 74 and 77, with no rain chance at any stadium from Greenville down to Eufaula, and the air keeps sliding after the band clears the field. Short sleeves at the coin toss, a sweatshirt on the bench by the second half in a lot of towns.
The reason is a cold front that crosses Wednesday. Behind it, drier air filters in from the north and stays parked through the weekend. Look at the difference: right now in Columbus the dew point is 72, which is why the evening air feels like a wet towel. Friday evening, humidity readings at game time run in the 50s and low 60s. Columbus drops to 59 Friday morning and climbs to 83 under full sun.
The coolest finish in the area is in Valley, where Valley and Beulah play. It is 74 around kickoff and 67 by the fourth quarter, a seven degree fall, with the muggiest air of any of our towns at 64 percent humidity — which will still feel dry compared with this week.
LaFayette is close behind. Around LaFayette and Chambers Academy it is 74 early and 68 late. Same story at Greenville, 74 down to 68, and out at Seale, where Russell County plays, 75 down to 68.
The Auburn-Opelika stands cool off in a hurry. Auburn and Lee-Scott start at 76 and reach 69, and it is the same at Opelika and Beauregard. Smiths Station and Glenwood go 76 to 70, and Central-Phenix City does the same. In Tuskegee, Booker T. Washington sits under partly cloudy skies with the wind essentially calm — 76 at kickoff, 69 later. Loachapoka and Notasulga will also see a few clouds slide through.
Columbus is the breeziest spot on the board, with a wind around 10 mph. Around Shaw, Hardaway, Columbus, Spencer, Kendrick, Jordan, Carver, Northside, Calvary Christian, Pacelli and Brookstone it is 74 around kickoff and barely moves, 73 by the fourth quarter. It is also the one place where a long kick may get nudged.
The warmest kickoffs in the area are south and east. Stewart County in Lumpkin and Chattahoochee County in Cusseta both start at 77, and Cusseta has the driest air anywhere at 49 percent humidity. Quitman County in Georgetown holds 73 late. Randolph Clay in Cuthbert, Schley County in Ellaville, Marion County in Buena Vista and Lanett and Springwood all sit near 72 at the end. Eufaula and Barbour County in Clayton start at 76 and settle into the low 70s and upper 60s.
Around LaGrange, where LaGrange, Troup County and LaGrange Academy play, it is 76 at kickoff and 71 by the fourth quarter. Callaway in Hogansville goes 76 to 70. Harris County in Hamilton starts at 74, Manchester at 74, Central-Talbotton at 74 and Taylor County in Butler at 75, all finishing right around 70.
What to bring: leave the umbrella in the truck. Take a light jacket if you are in Valley, LaFayette, Greenville, Seale, Auburn or Opelika. Take a blanket for the metal bleachers anywhere north of Columbus.
One more thing to watch. The sun is going down about two minutes earlier every night now, and it sets a little after half past seven. Friday's games will start in the dark, and this will be the first football night all season that actually feels like October.
