Sunday on the Lakes: Calm Morning Water From West Point to Eufaula
What is the wind and temperature forecast for Lake Harding, West Point Lake and Lake Eufaula Sunday?
Sunday stays calm on all three, with 8 AM readings of 55 degrees at West Point Lake, 57 at Lake Harding and 63 at Lake Eufaula, and wind no higher than 10 mph all day.

Wind is usually what decides whether a day on the water is pleasant or punishing, and Sunday there is barely any of it. Not one of the three big lakes in this area is forecast to see the wind top 10 mph at any point in the day, and two of them start the morning dead calm. Past about 15 mph a small boat starts taking a beating; Sunday never gets close.
At West Point Lake, on the water between West Point and LaGrange, 8 AM comes in at 55 degrees with the wind at zero and full sun. That is the coldest and the flattest start of the three. By 2 PM it is 78 degrees with a 5 mph breeze, still sunny, still easy.
Lake Harding, on the Chattahoochee north of Columbus astride the Georgia-Alabama line, starts at 57 degrees at 8 AM with a 5 mph breeze and sun. The afternoon reaches 79 degrees at 2 PM with the wind picking up to about 10 mph — enough to put a light chop on open water and enough to be welcome if you are sitting on a dock in the sun.
Lake Eufaula is the warm one. At 8 AM it is 63 degrees there with no wind and clear sky, a full 8 degrees milder than West Point Lake at the same hour. Part of that is simply latitude, and part of it is water: a big reservoir soaks up heat through the summer and gives it back slowly, so the air sitting over it at dawn does not cool as far as the air over the pine woods around LaGrange. Eufaula's afternoon runs to 82 degrees at 2 PM with a 5 mph breeze and sun.
The river feeding all of it is running right where it should be for late September. Over the seven days through Thursday, the Chattahoochee River in Columbus averaged about 3,480 cubic feet per second at the 14th Street gauge, roughly 122 percent of normal for these dates. The Chattahoochee River at West Point averaged about 3,350, or 110 percent of normal, and below Lake Eufaula near Columbia, Alabama, the average was about 4,150, or 87 percent. Upatoi Creek near Columbus came in at 115 cubic feet per second, about 78 percent of normal. All of those readings land inside the normal range. The dams release water in pulses to generate power, so any single reading swings wildly through the day — the week-long average is the honest way to look at it.
What to take: a windbreaker or a fleece for the launch at 8, because 55 degrees on open water with the sun barely up feels colder than 55 in the driveway, and you will want it off by mid-morning. Take more sunscreen than you think you need. The sun angle is still strong enough in late September to burn under a cloudless sky, and there is not a cloud in the Sunday forecast at any of the three lakes to hide behind.
