How cool will it get this weekend in Columbus and when does the heat come back?
Columbus drops to 59 degrees tonight and stays in the mid 80s this weekend under dry, sunny skies, then warms back to 91 Tuesday and 92 Wednesday.
Columbus topped out at 79 degrees Friday afternoon, 6 degrees below the normal high of 85 for September 25, and the morning low of 64 came in a degree under normal. The cool, dry air behind those numbers is the story of the next three days.
Two features are steering it. A coastal storm is deepening along the Eastern Seaboard while high pressure sits over the Great Lakes, and together they are pulling dry Canadian air south into west Georgia and east Alabama. Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City expect dew points across the area to fall into the 40s on Saturday. The dew point is simply the temperature at which air becomes saturated, so the lower it drops, the drier the air feels on your skin. That is the fall-like feel the forecasters described this morning, and it reaches from LaGrange and Hamilton down through Columbus, Phenix City and Eufaula.
You will notice it most at daybreak. Columbus falls to 59 degrees tonight under clear skies. At 8 AM Saturday it will be 57 degrees at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain and near West Point Lake, and 60 degrees along the RiverWalk in Columbus and Phenix City. Afternoons stay warm anyway: 85 Saturday and 86 Sunday in Columbus, with no rain in the forecast either day.
Then the pattern turns around. Columbus climbs to 88 degrees Monday, 91 Tuesday and 92 Wednesday, back above normal for late September, and the next meaningful rain chance, 27 percent, holds off until Thursday. The city has already recorded 96 days at 90 degrees or above this year.
Rainfall for the year stands at 40.30 inches, roughly three and a half inches ahead of normal, even with September running a little behind pace. Open the windows tonight. Air this dry in the Chattahoochee Valley rarely stays a full week.
