Weekend on the Lakes: Calm Water Early and Warm Afternoons at Eufaula
What is the weekend boating forecast for Lake Harding, West Point Lake and Lake Eufaula?
Saturday and Sunday bring calm to 5 mph wind on all three lakes, with mornings of 57 to 64 degrees and afternoons of 79 to 87, the warmest at Lake Eufaula on Sunday.

If you like the water flat, this is your weekend. The wind on Lake Harding, West Point Lake and Lake Eufaula never gets above 5 mph on either day, and at 8 in the morning it is forecast to be calm at all three. A small boat has a rough ride once the wind gets past about 15 mph, and nothing in this forecast comes close to that.
The other thing to plan for is the spread between morning and afternoon. On West Point Lake, up at LaGrange and West Point, Saturday starts at 57 degrees under a sunny sky and reaches 79 by 2 in the afternoon, with the wind calm both times. Sunday runs 58 at 8 a.m. and 82 at 2 p.m. with a 5 mph breeze and a rain chance of 3 percent — close enough to nothing that it is not worth rearranging a day over.
Lake Harding, north of Columbus on the Georgia-Alabama line, is a couple of degrees milder at dawn. Both Saturday and Sunday start at 59, calm and sunny, then climb to 79 Saturday afternoon and 82 Sunday afternoon with a light 5 mph wind. Sit on a dock there at 8 in the morning and you will want long sleeves; by lunch you will have forgotten where you put them.
Lake Eufaula is the warm end of the viewing area all weekend. Saturday morning starts at 63 and the afternoon reaches 82 under full sun. Sunday is warmer still, 64 in the morning and 87 by 2 in the afternoon, which is about 30 degrees above where West Point Lake starts its day. If you are running down toward Eufaula from Columbus or Phenix City on Sunday, pack for summer, not for fall.
One note on the river feeding all of this. Over the seven days through September 22, the Chattahoochee River in Columbus averaged about 5,500 cubic feet per second against a normal of roughly 3,000 for these dates, or 183 percent of normal. The Chattahoochee River at West Point averaged 168 percent of normal. Farther south, below Lake Eufaula near Columbia, Alabama, flow was about normal at 104 percent. Those are week-long averages on purpose: the dams release in pulses to make electricity, so any single reading can swing wildly within a day.
What to bring: a jacket or hoodie you can shed, because a 57-degree start on West Point Lake feels genuinely cold moving across open water, and a 22 to 23-degree warm-up follows by early afternoon at every lake. Sunscreen matters more than you would think in late September under a sky this clear, and with the air so dry, a water bottle goes further than it did last weekend. Anyone planning an early start should expect heavy dew on seats and gear at sunrise — a towel in the boat saves a wet morning.
