How cold will it be at the bus stop Monday morning in west Georgia and east Alabama?
Monday's 7 AM stops range from 52 degrees in Greenville to 57 in Columbus, Phenix City, Auburn and Opelika, with no rain anywhere.
The sun is not up yet at 7 o'clock anymore. Sunrise in Columbus came at 7:30 Saturday morning and slides a minute later each day, so anyone standing at a corner at 7 AM Monday will be doing it in the dark, in air that has had a clear, calm night to cool off. Every stop in the viewing area lands between 52 and 57 degrees, the sky is sunny or close to it everywhere, and the rain chance is zero from one end of the area to the other.
The coldest corner in the viewing area is Greenville, where Greenville students wait at 52 degrees with no wind at all. Hogansville, home of Callaway, is a degree warmer at 53. Around LaGrange, where LaGrange, Troup County and LaGrange Academy are, it will be 54 and calm, and Manchester and Butler — Taylor County's town — match that at 54 with a light 5 mph breeze.
A broad band of the area sits right at 55. That covers Hamilton and Harris County, Cusseta and Chattahoochee County, Buena Vista and Marion County, Talbotton and Central-Talbotton, Preston and Webster County, and Ellaville, where Schley County has the one stop in the area forecast to be mostly sunny instead of flat-out sunny. Across the state line, LaFayette and Chambers Academy, Valley and Beulah, and Lanett and Springwood all start at 55 too, with a 5 mph breeze that will make it feel a touch sharper than the number.
South and east, the mornings soften a little. Eufaula, Tuskegee and Booker T. Washington, Seale and Russell County, Lumpkin and Stewart County, Cuthbert and Randolph Clay, and Georgetown and Quitman County all come in at 56 degrees with almost no wind.
The warmest stops in the area are the busiest ones. Columbus sits at 57 degrees, which covers Shaw, Hardaway, Columbus, Spencer, Kendrick, Jordan, Carver, Northside, Calvary Christian, Pacelli and Brookstone. So do Phenix City and Central, Smiths Station and Glenwood, Auburn and Lee-Scott, Opelika and Beauregard, and the smaller stops at Loachapoka, Notasulga and Clayton, where Barbour County is. Pavement, brick and rooftops hold onto the previous day's heat and give it back slowly overnight, which is a good part of why the cities run a few degrees above the open country north of them.
Send a light jacket or a hoodie, not a coat, and make it something that fits in a backpack. Columbus climbs to 87 by Monday afternoon, a 30-degree swing from the corner to the car line, and anything heavier will spend the day on the gym floor. No umbrellas are needed anywhere.
Enjoy the cool while it is here. By Wednesday morning the low in Columbus is forecast near 68, and a 68-degree start does not call for a jacket at all.
