How cool will it get in Columbus this weekend and when does the heat come back?
Columbus starts near 57 degrees Sunday morning under dry Canadian air, then warms back to 91 Tuesday and 93 Wednesday.
Step out on the RiverWalk in Columbus at sunrise Sunday and the air will feel like something borrowed from late October. Saturday morning the thermometer at the Columbus Airport, where the city's official readings are taken, dropped to 58 degrees — 7 below the normal low of 65 for the date — and the afternoon only made it to 83, 2 degrees shy of the normal high. Sunday morning should start near 57.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City explain it simply enough: a stubborn low pressure system is parked near the New England coast while a big ridge builds over the Plains, and Georgia is caught in the northwesterly flow between them. That flow is pulling dry Canadian air straight down into the state. There is almost nothing in it to rain with. By Sunday afternoon they expect dew points — the temperature at which the air would have to cool to start forming dew — down in the low to mid 40s, which is about as dry as this area gets in September.
It will not last. Columbus should reach 86 Sunday and 87 Monday, then 91 Tuesday and 93 Wednesday, with forecasters expecting upper 80s and low 90s across much of west Georgia and east Alabama early to mid week as the ridge takes over and the wind turns southerly.
For perspective, Columbus has already logged 96 days at 90 or above this year and 37 at 95 or above, topping out at 100 on August 17. The current run of 90-degree days stands at zero. Tuesday looks like the day that ends.
So open the windows Sunday and Monday night in Hamilton, Cuthbert, Tuskegee and Manchester while it is free. Rain chances do not creep back into the Columbus forecast until Thursday at 15 percent and Friday at 30 percent.
