Bus Stop Forecast: Cool Fifties Monday With Patchy Fog Near the River
How cold will it be at the bus stop Monday morning in Columbus and Auburn?
Columbus, Auburn, Opelika and Phenix City all start Monday near 58 degrees at 7 AM, while Greenville is the cold spot at 53, and patchy fog is expected in Phenix City, Valley, Lanett and Eufaula.

At 7 o'clock Monday morning, every town in the viewing area starts in the 50s, and the spread from the coldest stop to the warmest is only 5 degrees. The bigger difference between one town and the next will be whether you can see down the road.
Greenville is the cold spot at 53 degrees, calm and clear, with Greenville High on the edge of town. Hogansville, home of Callaway, and Cuthbert, home of Randolph Clay, both start at 54.
A long list of towns sits at 55. That is LaGrange, where LaGrange, Troup County and LaGrange Academy all sit within a few miles of Lafayette Square, and the air there will be dead calm under a clear sky. Manchester is 55, Butler and Taylor County are 55, and Georgetown, home of Quitman County, is 55. Across the state line, LaFayette, Alabama, where LaFayette High and Chambers Academy are, starts at 55 with a light 5 mph breeze and mostly sunny skies.
At 56 you have Hamilton and Harris County, Cusseta and Chattahoochee County, Buena Vista and Marion County, and Talbotton and Central-Talbotton. Valley, home of Valley and Beulah, is also 56, but with patchy fog.
The 57-degree group runs through the southern half of the area: Eufaula, with patchy fog over town; Lanett, where Lanett and Springwood are, also foggy; Tuskegee and Booker T. Washington; Seale and Russell County; Ellaville and Schley County; Lumpkin and Stewart County, out toward Providence Canyon; and Preston and Webster County.
The warm stops are the ones closest to the interstate corridor and the city heat. Columbus starts at 58 and sunny with a 5 mph breeze, and that covers Shaw, Hardaway, Columbus, Spencer, Kendrick, Jordan, Carver, Northside, Calvary Christian, Pacelli and Brookstone. Phenix City and Central are also 58, but with patchy fog near the river. Auburn, with Auburn High and Lee-Scott, is 58, as are Opelika and Beauregard, Smiths Station and Glenwood, Loachapoka, Notasulga, and Clayton with Barbour County.
The fog is worth a minute of your morning. Clear skies and almost no wind let the ground give up its heat quickly overnight, and low, damp places near the Chattahoochee and the big lakes hold enough moisture that the air cools all the way to its dew point and turns to fog. That is why Phenix City, Valley, Lanett and Eufaula are the four names on the list with fog beside them. Use low beams rather than high beams, because high beams bounce the light back at you, and leave extra room in front of you.
Rain is not a factor anywhere, running from zero to 1 percent across all 28 towns, so leave the umbrella at home. A hoodie or a light jacket is the right call at the stop, but make it something that folds into a backpack, because Columbus climbs to 84 by afternoon and nobody will want sleeves at three o'clock. The air is dry enough that 55 degrees will feel crisp rather than clammy.
One more thing about the hour itself: sunrise in Columbus is 7:31 AM, so 7 o'clock is still a half-dark hour, and we are losing about two minutes of daylight every day between now and the December solstice.
