Valley Warms Back Toward 91 Midweek Before Rain Returns Friday
How hot will it get in Columbus this week and when does the rain come back?
Columbus warms from 84 on Monday to near 91 Wednesday and Thursday before rain chances return Friday at 43 percent and Saturday at 54 percent.

Columbus Airport, where the area's official readings are taken, bottomed out at 59 degrees at 5:57 Sunday morning — 6 degrees below the normal low of 64 for the date — and then climbed to 86 in the afternoon.
The number worth repeating is the dew point. By late afternoon it was near 42 degrees in Columbus, with the humidity down to 26 percent. The dew point is the temperature air has to be cooled to before moisture condenses out of it, so the lower it is, the drier the air feels and the further the temperature can fall after sunset. Air this dry is not homegrown. It came south on northwest winds around a broad dome of high pressure, and forecasters at Peachtree City measured only about half an inch of water in the entire column of air above Georgia. That is why a sunrise walk on the RiverWalk in Columbus and Phenix City has felt so clean this weekend, and why the afternoon humidity can dip close to 25 percent for an hour or two when the sun mixes that dry air down to the ground.
The warm-up starts now. Columbus reaches 84 on Monday under full sun, 87 on Tuesday, and 91 on both Wednesday and Thursday, which will feel summerlike again in Hamilton, Cusseta, Opelika and Eufaula. Then the ridge overhead breaks down, the wind turns out of the south, and moisture comes back with it: Friday carries a 43 percent chance of showers with a high near 88, and Saturday a 54 percent chance with a high near 85.
September has run a little dry here, 2.40 inches in Columbus against a normal 2.98, but the year as a whole is wet — 40.30 inches since January 1 against a normal of 36.93. The ground is still holding summer, too, about 70 degrees a couple of inches down. Soil lags the air by weeks, because dirt and the water in it take far more energy to warm and cool than air does, which is why one 59-degree morning does nothing to the ground under your feet.
