Columbus cools from ten straight 90s to a 59-degree Friday morning

Columbus is forecast to end a ten-day run of 90-degree highs with an 82-degree Thursday, and morning lows near 59 on Friday and Saturday.

The thermometer at the Columbus airport touched 90 yesterday at a quarter to one. That was the tenth day in a row at 90 or better, and the ninety-fifth of the year. Today's forecast high is 89. If it holds, the run ends quietly, one degree short.
What is ending it is not a cold front in the way most people picture one. A shallow pool of cooler, heavier air has been sliding down the east side of the mountains on a northeast wind, the setup forecasters at the Peachtree City office call a wedge. Cold air is dense, so it slips underneath the warm air ahead of it and stubbornly refuses to mix, holding clouds and drizzle in place while it works south. You can already feel the front edge of it here: the wind at the airport is out of the northeast around five, and the pressure has climbed three millibars in six hours.
Behind the wedge is the good part. Rain chances fall to near zero from Thursday through the weekend, and an air mass that started over eastern Canada gets dragged south behind a storm deepening off the East Coast.
At home that looks like this. Thursday, 82 and partly sunny. Friday, sunny and 84, with a morning low near 59 — seven degrees under the normal low of 66 for this stretch of September. Saturday morning starts near 59 again. The dew point this morning is about 70, which is why the air feels like a wet towel on the RiverWalk; by Friday that stickiness is gone.
It does not last long. Sunday 88, Monday 89, Tuesday 90, all sunny. Warm, though nothing near the 97 this date recorded in 2022.
Two mornings near 59 is what you get. If you have been waiting for a reason to take your coffee out to the porch before work, Friday and Saturday are the ones.
