Sixty-seven by the fourth quarter in Valley; no rain anywhere Friday

Friday night across west Georgia and east Alabama is dry and mostly clear, with kickoff temperatures of 74 to 77 and fourth quarters from 67 in Valley to 73 in Columbus.

Take a sweatshirt to Valley on Friday night. Not for kickoff, when it will still be 74 in the stands, but for the last ten minutes of the game, when the dry air behind this week's front lets the temperature slide to about 67. That is the coolest fourth quarter anywhere in the viewing area on Friday, September 25.
The headline for everybody else is what is missing. Rain chance on Friday night: zero. Not slight, not isolated. Zero, at every school from Greenville to Cuthbert, under mostly clear sky. The muggy air that has been sitting on us through ten straight 90-degree days will be long gone by then.
The fastest cooldown is in Lee County. At Auburn and Lee-Scott, and over at Opelika and Beauregard, it will be about 76 around kickoff and 69 by the fourth quarter. Dry air loses heat quickly once the sun is down, which is why that seven-degree drop happens between the first snap and the last. Same story at Booker T. Washington in Tuskegee, 76 falling to 69, and there the wind will be dead calm, so 69 will feel exactly like 69. Over the Chambers County line, LaFayette and Chambers Academy go 74 to 68, and Beulah joins Valley in the upper 60s. Lanett and Springwood stay a touch warmer, 76 to 72.
Columbus is the odd one out. Under the lights at Kinnett Stadium and A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium, where Shaw, Hardaway, Columbus, Spencer, Kendrick, Jordan, Carver, Northside, Calvary Christian, Pacelli and Brookstone play, it starts at 74 around kickoff and only eases to 73 late. A 10 mph breeze, the strongest in the area, will keep the air stirred and keep the temperature from settling. Across the river, Central-Phenix City runs 76 to 70, and Russell County at Seale is one of the cooler stops, 75 down to 68.
Up the river, LaGrange, Troup County and LaGrange Academy see 76 at kickoff and about 71 late, with the wind barely moving. Callaway at Hogansville goes 76 to 70. Harris County in Hamilton starts at 74 and holds near 70. In the northern tier, Manchester is 74 to 69, Greenville 74 to 68, Central-Talbotton 74 to 70 and Taylor County at Butler 75 to 70.
The south end of the area is the warm, dry end. Stewart County at Lumpkin and Chattahoochee County at Cusseta both start at 77, the warmest kickoff on the board, and hold around 72. Cusseta also has the driest air in the area at 49 percent humidity. Quitman County in Georgetown is 76 to 73, Randolph Clay in Cuthbert 75 to 72, Marion County at Buena Vista 75 to 72, Schley County at Ellaville 76 to 72, Webster County at Preston 76 to 71. Eufaula goes 76 to 70 and Barbour County at Clayton 76 to 69.
What to bring: nothing heavy, and leave the umbrella in the truck. A light jacket for the fourth quarter in Valley, LaFayette, Seale, Greenville, Auburn and Opelika. In Columbus, short sleeves will do all night.
One more thing worth knowing. We are losing about two minutes of daylight every day now, so the stadium lights are doing more of the work each week than they were in August.
