The ten-day run of 90s in Columbus ends Thursday, when a drier air mass drops highs to about 83 and Friday's low near 59.

The run is ending. Columbus reached 90 on Tuesday at a quarter to one, the tenth day in a row at 90 or better and four degrees above normal for the date. The overnight low only sagged to 73, seven above normal. That second number is the one people actually feel: mornings on the RiverWalk that never really cooled off, and back doors in Phenix City that were warm at seven in the morning.
There is one more day of it. Wednesday climbs back to about 90 with a small chance of an afternoon storm, the kind that pops up, dumps on one neighborhood and quits.
Then the air changes. A very strong dome of high pressure has parked over the far northeastern states and southern Canada, and a low pressure system winding up off the Mid-Atlantic coast is holding it in place. That combination turns the wind around to the north and northeast and pulls drier air down into Georgia and Alabama. Forecasters at Peachtree City and Birmingham both flagged the same thing this week: a noticeably cooler, drier start to fall, arriving Thursday and staying through the weekend.
The Columbus numbers: 83 and 62 on Thursday, 83 Friday with a morning low near 59, 84 Saturday with a low of 58. Rain chances drop to essentially zero from Thursday through the weekend. Expect Auburn, Opelika, LaGrange, Hamilton and Eufaula to run in the same neighborhood.
For scale, this date has been hotter. The record for September 22 in Columbus is 97, set in 2022, and the airport has logged 95 days at 90 or above this year, 37 of them at 95 or above.
A slight warm-up follows, 87 Sunday and 88 Monday, but the dry air sticks around, so the mornings stay in the upper 50s and low 60s. If you have been waiting to sleep with the windows open in LaGrange or Opelika, Thursday night is the night.
