How hot will it get in Columbus GA next week?
After a weekend in the mid 80s, Columbus warms to 88 Monday, 91 Tuesday and 92 degrees Wednesday and Thursday with virtually no rain.
It was 59 degrees in Columbus at daybreak with a shallow layer of fog sitting over the water, the kind of morning that makes the RiverWalk feel like a different season than the one we left behind in August. Enjoy it, because it has a short shelf life.
This weekend is the cool side of the deal. Columbus tops out near 85 today and 86 Sunday, with the low dropping to 56 Sunday morning. Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City explain the setup this way: a ridge of high pressure parked over the south-central states and a strong, slow storm system spinning off the Mid-Atlantic coast. Air flowing south between those two systems is unusually dry for late September. Dew points, which measure how much moisture the air is actually carrying, are expected to fall into the mid and upper 40s by Sunday. That is why mornings feel crisp from LaGrange to Eufaula and afternoons feel comfortable even in the 80s.
Then the thermometer turns around. The seven-day forecast for Columbus climbs to 88 Monday, 91 Tuesday, and 92 Wednesday and Thursday, with almost no rain in between. The normal high for today is 85, so by midweek we are running several degrees above where late September usually sits, and morning lows go from 56 Sunday to 70 by Thursday.
One thing worth watching: with air this dry, Peachtree City notes that parts of central Georgia may get close to critical humidity levels Monday and Tuesday. If you burn yard debris in Harris, Talbot or Meriwether County, that is the window to skip.
Columbus has already logged 96 days at 90 degrees or better this year. Next week adds to the list.
