What will the weather be like at Callaway Gardens and Providence Canyon this weekend?
Callaway Gardens starts at 57 degrees Saturday morning and reaches 81 in the afternoon, while Providence Canyon near Lumpkin starts at 59 and climbs to 82, with no rain at either.
If you want the coolest start to a walk this weekend, go up on the Pine Mountain ridge. At 8 AM Saturday it will be 57 degrees at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain and 57 at F.D. Roosevelt State Park above Warm Springs, and Sunday morning both sit at 56. At the same hour, Chewacla State Park just outside Auburn and Lakepoint at Eufaula read 63. That six- or seven-degree spread is the whole weekend in one number: same sunny sky across the valley, a noticeably different feel depending on where you park the car.
On the Chattahoochee RiverWalk between Columbus and Phenix City, it is 60 degrees at 8 AM Saturday with patchy fog hanging over the water, and 59 Sunday under a clear sky. Both afternoons reach 83 at 2 PM, with a light breeze near 10 mph off the river Sunday that will make the shaded stretches feel pleasant.
Down at Providence Canyon near Lumpkin, expect 59 degrees and patchy fog at 8 AM Saturday, 58 and clear Sunday, and 82 both afternoons. The canyon floor stays shaded and cool longer than the rim, so an early start there buys you more than it does most places.
The coolest afternoons in the viewing area belong to the ridge: 81 at Callaway Gardens both days, and 80 at F.D. Roosevelt. The warmest belong to the Alabama side and the far south, with Chewacla at 83 Saturday and Sunday and Lakepoint at 83 Saturday and 84 Sunday. Not one of these places has a rain chance above zero.
The fog Saturday morning is worth a word. The air near the ground cools overnight until it reaches its dew point, the temperature at which moisture has to condense, and near rivers and lakes it gets there first. That is why the RiverWalk, Callaway Gardens and Providence Canyon all start out patchy and Chewacla near Auburn does not. Sunshine burns it off quickly.
For anyone thinking past the trail to the garden bed, the soil about two and a half inches down is running 71 degrees. Soil lags the air by weeks because dirt and water hold heat far longer than the atmosphere does, which is why fall transplants still root fast even when the mornings feel like October.
The sun comes up at 7:30 AM and goes down at 7:30 PM, giving us 12 hours and 1 minute of daylight, and we are losing about two minutes a day now. The autumn equinox has already passed, but we still have a hair over twelve hours because sunrise and sunset are timed to the top edge of the sun and the atmosphere bends its light over the horizon. Equal day and night arrives a few days after the equinox here. The December solstice is 86 days off, on Monday, December 21 at 10:03 AM.
What to wear: a light long sleeve at 8 AM that you will take off by mid-morning, sunglasses, and more water than the temperature suggests. The UV index tops out near 7 both days, so sunscreen still matters on a 56-degree morning.
