Weekend on the Lakes: Calm Mornings Give Way to Afternoon Storm Chances
What is the weekend boating forecast for Lake Eufaula and West Point Lake?
Lake Harding, West Point Lake and Lake Eufaula will all be calm and in the upper 60s to low 70s at 8 AM Saturday and Sunday, with showers and thunderstorms likely by 2 PM both days.

If you only get a few hours on the water this weekend, take the early ones. At 8 AM Saturday the wind is forecast to be calm on all three big lakes, and the rain chance at that hour runs about 30 percent. By 2 PM both days, showers and thunderstorms are likely on every one of them, with chances between 55 and 61 percent.
On the dock at Lake Harding, on the Georgia–Alabama line north of Columbus, Saturday starts at 70 degrees with no wind and a 31 percent rain chance. By 2 PM it is 81 degrees, the wind is a light 5 mph and storm chances rise to 56 percent. Sunday morning is another 70-degree start with a 5 mph breeze and a 39 percent chance of showers, and the afternoon tops out near 77 with 10 mph of wind and a 59 percent chance of storms. That 10 mph is the strongest wind forecast anywhere on the lakes this weekend, and it is still well short of the 15 mph that starts making a small boat uncomfortable.
West Point Lake, between West Point and LaGrange, is the coolest of the three. Saturday opens at 69 degrees and calm with a 31 percent rain chance, then reaches 80 by mid-afternoon with a 56 percent storm chance. Sunday is cooler and wetter: 68 degrees at 8 AM with a 45 percent rain chance, and 76 degrees at 2 PM with the highest storm odds of the weekend anywhere in the area, 61 percent.
Lake Eufaula is the warm one. Saturday morning starts at 71 degrees with calm water and a 30 percent rain chance, and the afternoon climbs to 85 with a 59 percent storm chance. Sunday runs 71 at 8 AM and 81 at 2 PM, with the wind never above 5 mph.
Anglers who watch inflow will be interested to know the river feeding these lakes has been running close to its long-term average. Over the seven days ending September 27, the Chattahoochee River in Columbus averaged about 3,250 cubic feet per second against a normal of roughly 2,870 for those dates, and the river at West Point averaged about 3,160 against a normal near 3,040. Below Lake Eufaula, near Columbia, Alabama, the week averaged about 3,940 against a normal near 4,660 — still inside the ordinary range. The one gauge running low is Upatoi Creek near Columbus, at about three quarters of normal for the week.
The practical plan is simple. Be on the water at daylight, when the surface is glass and it is in the upper 60s to low 70s, and plan to be tied up or under cover by early afternoon. Put a rain jacket and a dry bag in the boat, keep a radar app open, and remember that lightning, not chop, is the thing to respect this weekend.
