What is the weather this weekend at Callaway Gardens, Providence Canyon and Chewacla State Park?
Both Saturday and Sunday are sunny and rain-free, with mornings in the mid to upper 40s at Callaway Gardens, F.D. Roosevelt State Park and Providence Canyon near Lumpkin, afternoons near 68 to 73 from Pine Mountain to Lakepoint at Eufaula, and a breezier 15 mph Sunday afternoon on the Pine Mountain

The useful number this weekend is the gap between morning and afternoon. Across the parks of west Georgia and east Alabama, temperatures climb more than 20 degrees between 8 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, and at Providence Canyon near Lumpkin the swing is a full 25 degrees. Whatever you put on at the trailhead, you will be carrying it by lunch. Both Saturday and Sunday are sunny with a zero rain chance everywhere.
On the Chattahoochee RiverWalk between Columbus and Phenix City, Saturday starts at 48 degrees with a light 5 mph breeze and reaches 72 by 2 in the afternoon. Sunday is nearly identical — 50 at 8 and 72 in the afternoon, with the wind a touch stronger at 10 mph. For a walk at sunrise, remember the sun does not clear the trees until after 7:49.
The Pine Mountain ridge is the cool corner of the area. Callaway Gardens begins Saturday at 45 degrees and tops out at 68, with F.D. Roosevelt State Park a degree cooler in the afternoon at 67 after a 46-degree start. Sunday morning runs 47 at both, and here is the catch for anyone heading to Dowdell's Knob: the Sunday afternoon wind on the ridge picks up to around 15 mph. Sixty-seven degrees with that kind of breeze on an exposed overlook feels considerably cooler than 67 in a parking lot.
Providence Canyon sits at 46 degrees Saturday morning and warms to 71, with Sunday running 50 and 71. Those red walls hold the chill early, so the canyon floor will feel colder than the rim until the sun gets high. Chewacla State Park outside Auburn has the mildest mornings of the bunch, 50 on Saturday and 54 on Sunday, climbing to 72 and 71. And Lakepoint State Park at Eufaula is the warm end of the area both days — 47 then 73 on Saturday, 51 then 73 on Sunday.
Dress in two layers you can shed. A jacket or fleece at the start, a short sleeve shirt underneath, and sunglasses, because there is not a cloud forecast in two days. The dew point is sitting in the low 40s, which is dry for this region, and dry air hides how much water you are losing — take more than you think you need, especially on the canyon loops at Lumpkin and the climbs at F.D. Roosevelt.
One more thing worth planning around. Columbus gets 11 hours and 8 minutes of daylight today, and we are losing close to 2 minutes every day, roughly a quarter hour a week. Sunset is at 6:57, and in a canyon or down in the woods along the Pine Mountain ridge it will be too dark to see your footing well before that. Start a long hike earlier than feels necessary, and be back at the car with light to spare. The December solstice, when the slide finally stops, is 59 days off on Monday, December 21.
Each day, 8 AM → 2 PM.
