SEASON AHEAD

Year is running three inches wetter than normal

Is it wetter than normal in Columbus Georgia this year

Yes, Columbus is running about three and a quarter inches above normal rainfall through September, with strong El Niño conditions favoring continued above-normal rain in the fall.

Through today, Columbus has picked up 39.12 inches of rain. That's about three and a quarter inches above where we normally sit by late September. The surplus is partly the work of a strong El Niño building across the Pacific, which tilts the odds toward wetter weather in the Gulf South. The seasonal outlook for October through December backs that up. There's a 40 percent chance we see above-normal rainfall over those three months, with a 33 percent lean toward warmer than normal temperatures. El Niño typically strengthens the jet stream across the southern United States, bringing more storm systems and a raised risk of severe weather. January through March looks to settle back toward normal. But if the pattern holds through the fall, we could see a notably wetter cold season ahead.
