What is the weather like at Callaway Gardens and Providence Canyon today?
Callaway Gardens at Pine Mountain starts at 56 degrees and reaches 79 this afternoon with a 10 mph breeze, while Providence Canyon near Lumpkin starts at 59 degrees and climbs to 81 under full sun.

The single most useful thing to know before you head outside today is how far the temperature travels between breakfast and midafternoon. At the parks across the viewing area, the spread from 8 AM to 2 PM runs between 20 and 25 degrees. Whatever you put on at the trailhead, you will want to take some of it off before you come back.
Start on the Pine Mountain ridge, because that is where the day stays most comfortable. At F.D. Roosevelt State Park, between Pine Mountain and Warm Springs, it is 56 degrees at 8 AM under mostly sunny sky with a 5 mph breeze, and only 77 at 2 PM. That is the coolest afternoon among the parks here, and the ridge does it the honest way: higher ground, thinner and better-mixed air, a little more wind. A few miles away at Callaway Gardens, the morning is also 56 degrees and sunny, warming to 79 by 2 PM with the breeze picking up to around 10 mph. That is the strongest wind at any of these places today, and on a sunny 79-degree afternoon it is a gift rather than a nuisance.
Down along the river between Columbus and Phenix City, the Chattahoochee RiverWalk reads 59 degrees at 8 AM with the air nearly still, then 84 degrees at 2 PM with a 5 mph breeze. That makes the RiverWalk the warmest of the six, and the pavement will add to it. Sunrise to sunset walkers have 11 hours and 59 minutes of daylight to work with, so early morning and the hour before the 7:29 PM sunset are the pleasant ends of the day.
At Providence Canyon near Lumpkin, it is 59 degrees and calm at 8 AM and 81 degrees by 2 PM under full sun, with essentially no rain chance. There is little shade on the canyon floor and the sun is at its highest just after 1 PM, so the early hours are the kinder ones. East of there, Chewacla State Park at Auburn and Lakepoint State Park at Eufaula share the warmest starts of the group at 62 degrees, calm and sunny, reaching 83 at Chewacla and 82 at Lakepoint. Around Auburn and Opelika, that means you can skip the jacket entirely.
The ultraviolet index tops out near 7 today, which is the high band, so sunscreen matters more than the calendar suggests. Bring a light long-sleeve layer you can tie around your waist, a hat for the middle of the day and more water than a 79-degree forecast makes you think you need.
One more thing worth filing away: we are losing about two minutes of daylight every day now, and the December solstice is 85 days out, on Monday, December 21 at 10:03 AM. The evening light you have on the trail this week is the most you will have for months.
