How windy is it on Lake Eufaula and Lake Harding today?
The wind is about 10 miles an hour this afternoon on Lake Harding, West Point Lake and Lake Eufaula, with sunny skies and 2 PM temperatures of 71, 69 and 75 degrees.

If you are standing on a dock at Lake Harding this afternoon, watching the water for a reason to go or stay, the wind is giving you the answer. All three of the area's big lakes are running near 10 miles an hour today, comfortably under the roughly 15 mile an hour mark where a small boat starts taking a beating across open water. The sky is clear and the rain chance is zero on every one of them.
Lake Harding, the Chattahoochee reservoir north of Columbus on the Georgia–Alabama line, reaches 71 degrees at 2 PM with that 10 mile an hour breeze and full sun. West Point Lake, the big water at West Point and LaGrange, is the coolest of the three at 69, also with a 10 mile an hour wind and sunshine. Lake Eufaula is the warm one: 75 degrees at 2 PM, same light wind, same clear sky. Six degrees separate the Eufaula end of the valley from the LaGrange end, which is about as mild a gradient as the area produces.
The wind is out of the northeast, so the water tucked against a northeastern bank will stay glassiest while the long southwest-facing stretches build the most chop. On a day this light, that matters more for comfort than for safety.
The river feeding these lakes is behaving normally for late October, which is worth knowing before you pick a ramp. Over the seven days through October 24, the Chattahoochee River in Columbus averaged about 2,420 cubic feet per second against a normal of roughly 2,830 for those dates — about 85 percent, well within the usual range. At West Point the week averaged about 2,570 against a normal near 2,810. Below Lake Eufaula, near Columbia, Alabama, the week ran about 5,280 against a normal of roughly 4,810, a little on the high side of ordinary. Upatoi Creek near Columbus, which is not dam-controlled, averaged 131 against a normal of 151.
Those are week-long averages on purpose. The dams at West Point, Columbus and Eufaula release in pulses to make electricity, so a single reading can swing from a third of normal to double within a day. If the water looks suddenly higher or lower than it did two hours ago, that is the schedule at work, not rainfall. There has not been any rainfall to speak of — Columbus recorded no rain at all on Saturday.
The dry air is the thing that will sneak up on you. The dew point is near 47 degrees and the humidity is down around 47 percent, which means sweat evaporates off your arms before you notice it and the sun burns a scalp faster than the mild temperature suggests. It also means the air cools off quickly once the sun drops: Columbus is headed for a low near 51 tonight after a low of 49 yesterday morning.
Sunset is at 6:55 this evening, and we are losing close to two minutes of daylight a day. Make sure the trailer lights work before you leave Valley, Georgetown or Phenix City, and throw a fleece in the boat for the run back in.
Each day, 8 AM → 2 PM.
