What is the weather at Callaway Gardens and F.D. Roosevelt State Park today?
At 2 PM Sunday, Callaway Gardens at Pine Mountain is 69 degrees and F.D. Roosevelt State Park above Warm Springs is 68, both sunny with a 15 mile an hour wind and no rain chance.

Stand on the Pine Mountain ridge this afternoon and you are in the coolest, breeziest air anywhere in the viewing area. At F.D. Roosevelt State Park, above Warm Springs, 2 PM brings 68 degrees under full sun with the wind running about 15 miles an hour. Three hundred feet lower and 80 miles south, at Lakepoint State Park on Lake Eufaula, the same hour is 75 with the wind at 10. That is the whole spread of the day: seven degrees, and a breeze that is twice as noticeable on top of the ridge as it is along the river.
Here is how the afternoon looks place by place. Callaway Gardens at Pine Mountain, in Harris County, reaches 69 at 2 PM with a 15 mile an hour wind and sunshine, no rain in the picture. The Chattahoochee RiverWalk, the paved trail running through Columbus and Phenix City, is 73 with a 10 mile an hour breeze and a clear sky. Chewacla State Park, just south of Auburn, matches it at 73 with the same light wind. Providence Canyon, outside Lumpkin in Stewart County, sits at 72 with 10 miles an hour. Every one of these places has a zero percent rain chance today.
Dress for the wind rather than the thermometer. Sixty-eight degrees on an exposed ridge above Warm Springs feels noticeably cooler than 73 down in the trees at Chewacla, so a light windbreaker you can tie around your waist is the right call for the Pine Mountain parks and unnecessary almost everywhere else.
The other thing to pack is water, and more of it than the mild numbers suggest. The dew point across the area is down near 47 degrees with humidity around 47 percent. In air that dry, sweat evaporates before you ever feel damp, so you lose fluid without the usual warning signs. The sun is also stronger than it looks this late in the year — the ultraviolet index tops out near 5.5 today, enough to burn a bare neck on a long walk at Providence Canyon.
Gardeners who like to read the ground rather than the calendar have a useful number too: soil a couple of inches down is running about 63 degrees across the area right now, down from the low 70s earlier in the season. Cool, workable soil is why late October suits bulbs and woody plantings.
Watch the clock on the way back. Sunrise came at 7:51 this morning and sunset arrives at 6:55 this evening, giving 11 hours and 4 minutes of daylight. We are losing a little under two minutes a day, which is roughly 13 minutes a week, so the turnaround time that works today will leave you finishing in the dark by the middle of November. The December solstice, the shortest day of the year, lands on Monday, December 21 at 10:03 AM — 57 days out.
Light layers, a windbreaker for the ridge, a hat, and a full bottle. On the drive home through Hamilton or Lumpkin, the headlights will be on earlier than you expect.
Each day, 8 AM → 2 PM.
Forecast: National Weather Service, at each place. Wind and rain are the highest of the readings shown.
