What will the weather be this weekend at Callaway Gardens, Providence Canyon and Chewacla?
Saturday is the dry day at west Georgia and east Alabama parks, with 60-degree mornings on the Pine Mountain ridge and afternoons from 72 at F.D. Roosevelt State Park to 79 at Lakepoint near Eufaula, before showers become likely Sunday morning.

If you only get outside once this weekend, make it Saturday morning. At 8 AM Saturday the rain chance is 5 or 6 percent at every park in the viewing area, from the RiverWalk in Columbus to Lakepoint near Eufaula. Twenty-four hours later, at the same hour, showers are likely at all of them, with chances of 60 to 62 percent.
On the Chattahoochee RiverWalk between Columbus and Phenix City, Saturday starts at 63 degrees under partly sunny sky with a light 5 mph breeze off the water, and climbs to 77 by 2 PM with a 24 percent chance of a passing shower and the wind up to 10 mph. Sunday morning there is 64 degrees and a 61 percent chance of showers and storms, easing to a 46 percent chance by the 75-degree afternoon.
Up on Pine Mountain the numbers run cooler, which is the whole reason to drive up there. Callaway Gardens at Pine Mountain opens Saturday at 60 degrees under mostly cloudy sky and only reaches 73 by 2 PM, and that is the breeziest spot on the list, with the wind near 15 mph in the afternoon. Along the ridge at F.D. Roosevelt State Park above Warm Springs it is also 60 at 8 AM, and the afternoon stops at 72 Saturday and just 68 on Sunday, the coolest afternoon anywhere in our 19 counties.
Providence Canyon near Lumpkin is a little milder: 62 degrees at 8 AM Saturday with some sun, 76 by 2 PM with a 27 percent shower chance, then 64 and 74 on Sunday. Chewacla State Park outside Auburn has the warmest Saturday start at 65 degrees, reaching 77 in the afternoon. The warmest place to stand all weekend is Lakepoint near Eufaula, 64 degrees at 8 AM and 79 by 2 PM Saturday, with 66 and 76 on Sunday.
That 15 to 20 degree spread between early morning and midafternoon is normal for this stretch of fall. With dry air overhead, the ground gives up its heat quickly overnight and then warms fast once the sun is up, so a long-sleeve layer at the trailhead becomes short sleeves within two hours. Dress for both and plan to carry something.
For Saturday afternoon, a packable rain shell is enough insurance against a shower chance that runs 18 percent on the Pine Mountain ridge and 28 percent down at Eufaula. For Sunday, take real rain gear or plan an early start, because the likeliest rain is in the morning hours and clay trails in the canyons near Lumpkin stay slick well after the sky clears.
One more thing to plan around: daylight is down to 11 hours and 1 minute here and shrinking by nearly two minutes a day, with the sun setting at 6:53 PM today. An afternoon out on the Pine Mountain ridge or along the river ends sooner than it did a month ago, so start earlier than feels necessary and let the last mile be the warmest part of the day.
Each day, 8 AM → 2 PM.
